The newly restored print of Bahram Beyzaie's 1984 masterpiece Bashu, the Little Stranger is playing theatrically across North America, distributed by Film Movement in the United States and Montreal-based Ritual in Canada. The restoration launched in the Venice Classics section of the 2025 Venice Film Festival, where it won the prize for best restored film. Beyzaie's landmark tells the story of Bashu, a boy from the war-torn south of Iran who flees north and is taken in by Na'i, a village woman played unforgettably by Susan Taslimi; a film about language, belonging, motherhood, and the meaning of home that many consider among the greatest Iranian films ever made. The theatrical rollout arrives amid a wave of North American interest in classic Iranian cinema: New York's Metrograph recently hosted the retrospective Travel Companions dedicated to Beyzaie and Amir Naderi, and distributors report strong audience demand, with European releases of Bashu planned as well.
