The Judgment of Paris, a new one-act opera by composer Jake Heggie and librettist Gene Scheer, brings the historic 1976 Paris wine tasting to the stage. At the blind competition, Napa Valley wines were ranked above celebrated French labels for the first time, transforming California’s position in the international wine world. The comedy combines the real figures involved in the tasting with the mythological gods Venus and Bacchus. Heggie and Scheer saw the event’s rivalry, pride, and high stakes as ideal material for an opera that could be both entertaining and meaningful. Conducted by Kent Nagano, the work receives its world premiere at Festival Napa Valley on July 18, with a cast including Danielle de Niese, Quinn Kelsey, Nicholas Phan, Simone McIntosh, and Brenda Rae.

اپرای یک‌پرده‌ای «داوری پاریس» با موسیقی جیک هگی و متن جین شیر، رویداد تاریخی شراب‌چشی سال ۱۹۷۶ را به صحنه می‌آورد؛ رقابتی کور در پاریس که در آن شراب‌های ناپا برای نخستین بار بالاتر از نمونه‌های مشهور فرانسوی قرار گرفتند و جایگاه کالیفرنیا را در صنعت جهانی شراب تغییر دادند. این کمدی تازه، شخصیت‌های واقعی آن رقابت را با ونوس و باکوس، خدایان اساطیری، درهم می‌آمیزد. هگی و شیر می‌گویند شکوه، رقابت و غرور حاضر در این ماجرا امکان خلق اثری سرگرم‌کننده و در عین حال معنادار را فراهم کرده است. نخستین اجرای جهانی اپرا ۱۸ ژوئیه در جشنواره ناپا ولی، با رهبری کنت ناگانو و حضور دنیل دنیز، کوئین کلسی، نیکلاس فن، سیمون مک‌اینتاش و برندا ری برگزار می‌شود.
