Paula Vogel Helps Launch New Writers’ Retreat, Bards on the Bay

Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Paula Vogel, alongside former Huntington Theatre managing director Michael Maso and arts patron Grace Nordhoff, is launching a new center for playwrights and theatrical composers. Called Bards on the Bay, the program is set to open in 2028 in Wellfleet, on the Cape Cod coast of Massachusetts. The retreat will sit on a four-acre property overlooking Cape Cod Bay, home to six 1948 cottages built in the Bauhaus style. Known locally as the Colony, the site has long been a haven for celebrated artists and writers, among them Paul Newman and Faye Dunaway. Writers will be offered stays of one to three weeks, with no expectation that they hand over a finished work by the end. The aim is to give artists time, quiet, and space to write. A place where creators across generations can work side by side, share ideas, and nurture new texts as they take shape. Alongside the summer residencies, the center will also host programs for the local community in spring and fall. Explaining her motivation, Vogel pointed to the closing of several major play development centers in the United States, calling this one of the hardest moments yet for writing and producing new plays. Playwright Sarah Ruhl, one of Vogel's mentees, has called such a refuge essential for writers of every generation.
