Movies Aren’t Therapy: “Mike Mills” on Parents, Children, and Filmmaking

🎬 RogerEbert.com · August 3, 2026 · Owrang Weekly #14

With the release of a Criterion set collecting three of his films, Clint Worthington has interviewed the American filmmaker Mike Mills for RogerEbert.com about family, childhood, parents, and the traffic between a private life and the films made out of it. I'll Remind You of Everything, its title taken from a line in C'mon C'mon, brings together Beginners (2010), 20th Century Women (2016) and C'mon C'mon (2021), each of them drawn from Mills's own experience. Beginners came out of his father, who in the last years of his life, after his wife's death, came out as gay, and who died in 2004. 20th Century Women returns to Mills's childhood and adolescence in Southern California with his mother, a child of the Depression, played in the film by Annette Bening. C'mon C'mon grew out of becoming a father himself and out of listening to the next generation. Together the three trace a line from childhood to parenthood, from what we inherit from our parents to what we hand on to our children. Mills says he never intended them to be seen as connected, but now regards them as effectively a single project with different doors into it; the set was very nearly called Parents and Children. Mills is clear that filmmaking is not a substitute for therapy. The films are not there to heal family wounds or to settle anything. Cinema is rather a way of looking at people more closely, of holding on to memory, and of accepting how complicated human relationships are. He sees his characters as neither heroes nor simply victims, but as people who can be lovable, damaging and helpless at the same time. He also notes that the personal is not separable from the political: his father's emotional life, in its most private layer, was part of the history of twentieth-century American oppression of queer people. A substantial part of the conversation concerns objects, places, music and photographs in his work. He does not attend only to what happens to his characters; houses, streets, clothes and everyday things carry memory in his films too. That habit of seeing comes out of his background in graphic design, photography and short films, and it is why his work moves between narrative fiction, personal recollection and documentary. Alongside the three features, the Criterion set gathers Mills's short films, from Deformer (1996) to I Am Easy to Find (2019), the music videos he directed for Air and Talking Heads, and new interviews with him. Thumbsucker was left out; Mills calls it his starter marriage, the film where he learned to be a filmmaker, but it did not fit the brief. What the set shows is that his films, for all their differences of form, keep returning to a single question: how do you come to know the people who made you, without simplifying them or tidying their lives into a story?
