Mitchell Kaplan, founder of the independent bookstore Books & Books in Coral Gables, Florida, and Stephen Colbert, former host of CBS's The Late Show, have been named co-winners of an anti-censorship award. It is part of the 47th American Book Awards, given by the Before Columbus Foundation, a nonprofit based in Oakland, California, which was established by the author, playwright and publisher Ishmael Reed. CBS ended Colbert's programme in May and cited economic reasons, an explanation Colbert and others have questioned. Kaplan said booksellers across the country have been fighting censorship for many years and that he accepts the award standing with all of them. He added that Books & Books will mark it in South Florida in October, during Banned Books Week. The foundation also honoured Baldwin, Nicholas Boggs's biography of James Baldwin; Separation of Church and Hate by John Fugelsang; and the poetry collection Variations in Blue by Adela Najarro. The novelist and playwright Karen Tei Yamashita received a lifetime achievement prize. The ceremony takes place on September 26 at 1:30 in the afternoon, at the Alumni House on the UC Berkeley campus.
