Locarno 2026: I Rarely Wake Up Dreaming, Hearing, Bruton

🎬 RogerEbert.com · August 24, 2026 · Owrang Weekly #17

Robert Daniels’ report from the 2026 Locarno Film Festival looks at three films with very different strengths. Isabel Stever’s I Rarely Wake Up Dreaming follows Ole, a trans man, and his fiancée Olia at the beginning of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. As war, nationalism, and discrimination close in around them, Ole’s identity becomes something others force him to weigh against the expectation that he should fight. Daniels praises Markus Breit’s performance and the film’s compassionate attention to a kind of human cost that is often absent from conventional war coverage. Lê Bảo’s Hearing, meanwhile, centers on a multigenerational Vietnamese family bound by a long-standing agreement of silence. Through sound, dreamlike imagery, and surreal shifts between urban and rural life, the film becomes, in Daniels’ view, one of the festival’s most adventurous audiovisual experiences. Bruton, directed by Vincent Grashaw and inspired by the true story of a Miami drug dealer sent to prison, receives a more mixed response. Daniels admires Theo Rossi’s performance, but argues that the film gradually loses the realism of its opening as its attempt to combine prison drama with criticism of the criminal justice system gives way to sentimentality and familiar genre conventions.

I Rarely Wake Up Dreaming، Hearing و Bruton

I Rarely Wake Up Dreaming
