The Los Angeles Philharmonic opened its 2026-2027 subscription season on October 3 at Disney Hall, the first since the end of Gustavo Dudamel's tenure as music director. Richard S. Ginell writes in SF Classical Voice that attendance was sparse and the seats behind the orchestra were empty, which raises the question of whether the audiences Dudamel drew will keep coming. Kwamé Ryan, 56, the Canadian-born music director of the Charlotte Symphony, made his debut with the orchestra. The program began with John Adams's "Short Ride in a Fast Machine", which the critic found louder than ever. Acting concertmaster Bing Wang and principal violist Ben Ullery were the soloists in Mozart's Sinfonia Concertante, K. 364, in a stylish and agreeable reading. The evening ended with Aaron Copland's Third Symphony of 1946, whose finale is launched by the famous "Fanfare for the Common Man". Ginell writes that Ryan drew exactly the electricity the work needs, although the brass were not restrained enough in the first movement.
