In an NPR interview with Terry Gross, Kyle MacLachlan discusses his new memoir Fictional Selves and his long partnership with David Lynch. He was 23 and barely out of drama school when he auditioned for Lynch's Dune. The 1984 film was panned by critics, but it began a friendship and collaboration that lasted decades. MacLachlan went on to star in Blue Velvet and the series Twin Peaks. He says his job in those works was to guide the audience into a frightening place, and he calls himself "David's submersible." Lynch's death in January 2025 left him in shock, he says. He did not know how Lynch, a very private person, would feel about some of the stories he tells about difficult times in their friendship. MacLachlan recalls that the Dune books were a lifeline during his hard junior high and high school years. He also talks about falling in love with his Blue Velvet co-star Laura Dern, which he says Lynch did not discourage. Of Dennis Hopper, he says the actor was charming around the set but so frightening once the cameras rolled that all he had to do was react.
