In his final dispatch from the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, Robert Daniels examines three visually striking films centered on lonely, vulnerable protagonists. Aung Phyoe's feature debut Fruit Gathering, winner of the festival's Crystal Globe, follows the turbulent queer romance of two women working in a crowded Yangon garment factory, shaped by desire, emotional dependence, and exploitative labor conditions. Daniels praises the film's visual beauty and intimate central dynamic, while finding its broader themes less fully developed. Shuntaro Uchida's Incinerator follows a reserved nine-year-old girl through a seemingly endless summer as family instability and an unexpected friendship help her express grief and gain confidence. Miroslav Terzic's psychological drama 3 Weeks After concerns a teenager who becomes the target of relentless bullying following his best friend's suicide. Daniels admires its powerful opening, unsettling sound design, and haunting imagery, though he argues that its overstated conclusion weakens an otherwise controlled examination of violence and blame.
