It Was Once Fire: A Locarno Critics Academy Correspondence

🎬 MUBI Notebook · September 14, 2026 · Owrang Weekly #20

MUBI Notebook, working with the Locarno Critics Academy, is publishing a series of critical letters in which this year's participants reflect on the Swiss film festival. In the first piece, three critics exchange letters about the films they saw, which dealt with fractured relationships and stubborn presences, and their experiences at Locarno beyond the screenings. One critic writes from Brooklyn about how festival time distorts perception, making ten days feel like two months compressed into half an hour, and compares remembering the festival's beginning to recalling a film.
