I Was Compelled to Revisit: Rory Kennedy on Freefall: A Reckoning for Boeing

Nell Minow speaks with Rory Kennedy about Freefall: A Reckoning for Boeing, her follow-up to the 2022 documentary Downfall: The Case Against Boeing. While Downfall focused on the two 737 MAX crashes that killed 346 people, Freefall examines what happened afterward and centers the whistleblowers who warned that Boeing’s once-celebrated quality control had been sacrificed to cost-cutting and executive incentives. Kennedy says she felt compelled to return to the subject after a series of new incidents, including the Alaska Airlines door-plug failure and the death of former Boeing whistleblower John Barnett. The new documentary takes viewers deeper inside Boeing factories and into the experiences of employees who argue that the company’s traditional emphasis on engineering and safety has been replaced by a shareholder-first culture. Kennedy also discusses filming intimate moments with Barnett’s family, her cautious use of reenactments, and the importance of clearly distinguishing recreated material from archival footage. She argues that accountability depends not only on Boeing’s leadership but also on the Department of Justice, the FAA, and elected officials whose decisions determine how strongly corporations are regulated.

Freefall: A Reckoning for Boeing Downfall: The Case Against Boeing است.
