Hoda Afshar’s ‘a/part’ at Buxton Contemporary in Melbourne

In The Guardian, Dee Jefferson interviews Hoda Afshar, the Iranian Australian artist whose new exhibition, "a/part", is on at the University of Melbourne's Buxton Contemporary until April 24, 2027. Afshar says that as a teenager in Iran in the 1990s she and her friends were detained by the morality police, and that her generation calls itself the "burned generation". She moved to Australia in 2007. The show gathers projects about what she calls "states of exception", a term from the Italian theorist Giorgio Agamben for places where laws that apply to ordinary citizens do not hold. They include "Remain" (2018), made with the Kurdish Iranian writer Behrouz Boochani and refugee men detained on Manus Island, "Code Black/Riot", on Indigenous young people in detention in far north Queensland, and "Agonistes" (2021), on Australian whistleblowers. A new work, "Shafaq", made in July, reflects her fears for her family in southern Iran as the United States resumed bombing there. Jefferson calls the works some of the most vivid and urgent Australian art of the past decade. Afshar says her aim is to bring people together, and that she cares about human life and dignity.

نمایشگاه تازهٔ او با عنوان «a/part» تا ۲۴ آپریل ۲۰۲۷ در Buxton Contemporary وابسته به University of Melbourne برپاست. Wikimedia Commons
