“Furious” Goes Beyond Its “Black Widow” Inspiration

David Bianculli writes for NPR that Hulu's new series "Furious," though openly inspired by the 1987 film "Black Widow," quickly becomes something of its own. The older film is even named on screen in the opening credits. In "Black Widow," Debra Winger played an investigator pursuing a woman, played by Theresa Russell, who married wealthy men and then murdered them. Elizabeth Meriwether, Bianculli argues, has not merely updated that premise but transformed it, with flawed and complicated characters, unexpected humor, and twists that resist prediction. Meriwether created the sitcom "New Girl" as well as the miniseries "The Dropout" and "Dying for Sex." Emmy Rossum, Fiona in "Shameless," stars as FBI agent Alice Black, on the trail of a woman she suspects of serial murder. The fugitive is played by Lola Petticrew, the Irish actor from "Say Nothing," a character who passes under many names and guises and grows more slippery, and more layered, the longer we watch. Quincy Tyler Bernstine appears as Nora, one of Alice's FBI superiors. For Bianculli the series draws much of its force from what sits beneath the chase. Nora has studied Greek mythology and reads both Medusa and the Furies not as monsters but as angry victims. The killer's motive turns out to be neither greed nor bloodlust but revenge, rooted in a dark past involving a sex-trafficking ring of young girls, with associations to the Jeffrey Epstein case that Bianculli calls uncomfortable. The hunter and the hunted do not meet face to face until midway through the eight-episode series, and that is where it rises.

مری‌ودر سازنده مجموعه کمدی «New Girl» و دو مینی‌سریال «The Dropout» و «Dying for Sex» هم هست.
