Five Inspirations | Jocelyn Charles

🎬 MUBI Notebook · June 28, 2026 · Owrang Weekly #9

In MUBI's Notebook, Jocelyn Charles talks about five sources of inspiration for the film God Is Shy. The first is friends, colleagues, and the artists whose work Charles follows. According to Charles, talking with friends and seeing their work creates a kind of healthy competition and keeps alive the desire to do better. The second inspiration is Akira Toriyama and the manga Dr. Slump. Charles read Dragon Ball with siblings as a child and used to draw the manga covers. What has stayed in Charles's mind from Dr. Slump is its humor, the oversized heads, and the exaggerated facial expressions. Charles says that preserving humor everywhere matters, and that works which are too serious and too literal are difficult to connect with. The third source of inspiration is live action cinema. Although Charles works in animation and drawing, Charles feeds mostly on live action films and photography. The example named is The Wailing by Na Hong-jin. In Charles's view, animation can still learn from live action cinema in dialogue, staging, and the development of characters. The fourth inspiration is the photographs of Martin Parr. Charles is drawn to their humor, bright colors, and busy, highly detailed compositions, and sees in these photographs a real potential to be turned into illustration, admiring Parr's eye for unusual people and funny situations. The final inspiration is toys and figurines. Charles is drawn to the shrunken, simplified version of the world these objects present, a world that is funnier, more minimal, and a little offbeat. In Charles's view, the form of the toy and the figurine can be a way to say something more serious about the world.
