The San Francisco Symphony has named jazz composer and mallet percussionist Christopher Thompson the winner of its sixth annual Emerging Black Composers Project award. The Michael Morgan Prize, named for the late Oakland Symphony conductor, includes a $15,000 commission for a new work to be performed by the San Francisco Symphony during the 2027-28 season. Also known as Master Christopher, Thompson creates work that combines contemporary art music, jazz, percussion, and notated rap through his Music Desegregation project. He says his new commission will explore the power of rap notation as a compositional force while preserving the orchestra's classical identity and technical strength. Thompson will receive mentorship from members of the selection committee and resources to workshop the piece at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. Based in Philadelphia, he teaches at the City University of New York and is pursuing a doctorate in composition at the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University. The jurors praised his distinctive voice, memorable music, and highly detailed scores.
