Celebrating Carlisle Floyd, Father of American Opera, at 100

🎼 SF Classical Voice · June 20, 2026 · Owrang Weekly #8

San Francisco Classical Voice marks the centennial of Carlisle Floyd, the influential American composer and librettist often called the father of American opera. Floyd, who died in 2021 at the age of 95, helped create a distinct language for American opera at a time when the form was still largely associated with European traditions. His works brought Southern American stories, speech patterns, moral conflicts, religious pressures, and local history into the opera house, showing that American opera could speak from its own landscapes and cultural memory. Floyd’s best known work is Susannah, first performed in 1955 at Florida State University and later recognized as one of the most frequently performed American operas. Based on the biblical story of Susannah and the Elders but relocated to rural Tennessee, the opera explores innocence, communal judgment, religious intolerance, and the pressure of society on the individual. The Carlisle Floyd Centennial concert at Carnegie Hall will take place on June 20, 2026, with artists including Susan Graham, Gabriella Reyes, Edward Nelson, Reginald Smith Jr., and Ryan McKinny, joined by the choirs of the University of Houston and Florida State University. The celebration revisits the legacy of an artist who helped bring opera closer to American life, language, and memory.
