August’s Best Reviewed Fiction

📚 LitHub · August 31, 2026 · Owrang Weekly #18

Lit Hub, drawing on review data from Book Marks, its own review aggregator, has named five titles as August's best-reviewed works of fiction. Chang-Rae Lee's A Tender Age leads with eleven rave reviews. Shelf Awareness writes that in a masterful almost-ending Lee keeps what happened veiled, leaving the door open to the reader's own interpretation. Téa Obreht's Sunrise is second with ten raves, a novel that Booklist says both emulates and subverts tales of the Old West in order to reach gender, forbidden love, myth, history and the destruction of the wild. Paul Yoon's Etna comes third, a compact novel that The Atlantic says has the shape of an epic despite its brevity, and whose faith in human connection is never overwhelmed by the broken bodies strewn through it. Claudia Rankine's Triage takes fourth place, a book the Boston Globe calls intellectually and visually alive while stressing what it asks of the reader in confronting the suffering of people in Gaza. Chris Bohjalian's The Amateur completes the list with seven raves, described by The New York Times Book Review as a morality tale and a study of guilt that eventually becomes a courtroom drama.

The New York Times Book Review
