A French-Language “Zorro” Offers a Charmingly Offbeat Interpretation of the Famous Vigilante

🎬 RogerEbert.com · July 4, 2026 · Owrang Weekly #10

In a review by Lacy Baugher, RogerEbert.com looks at the French-language reimagining of "Zorro" starring Jean Dujardin (Oscar winner for "The Artist"). The eight-part series, premiering June 30 on MHz Choice, brings back the century-old masked hero not in fully traditional form but as a blend of swashbuckling adventure, comedy, colonial politics, and midlife crisis. The story opens in 1821. Don Diego de la Vega has long since hung up the mask and, as the newly appointed mayor of Los Angeles, hopes to pursue justice through civic reform. But corruption, his late father's crushing debts, and Don Emmanuel's exploitation of the town's poor force him back into his old role. The show's strangest twist is a love triangle in which Diego competes with his own masked alter ego for his wife's affection. Baugher finds this Zorro offbeat and at times uneven; the season sags in the middle, and some of the hidden-identity gags run too long. Still, Dujardin's warm, funny performance, the colorful old-California setting, the playful tone, and the series' attention to Diego's inner conflict make the return an appealing one. In the critic's view, this may not be the Zorro we expected, but his 2026 comeback is a welcome and entertaining one.
