A Debut Novel About Individual Agency in Apocalyptic Times

⚡ Electric Literature · June 20, 2026 · Owrang Weekly #8

In this Electric Literature interview, Mandana Chaffa speaks with Paige Lewis about Canon, Lewis’s debut novel. Lewis was previously known as a poet, especially for the collection Space Struck, and Canon marks her move from poetry into fiction. The novel imagines an apocalyptic world where people have been divided into two simple and dangerous categories: Good Guys and Bad Guys. That division becomes the center of the book’s larger question: who gets to name the world, who controls the official story, and who is silenced or erased by that story? The novel follows two central characters. Yara is a wounded nonbinary teenager chosen by God for a major mission. Adrena is a prophet who believes that mission should have been hers. As their paths move toward each other, Canon asks what individual agency can mean in a world where power has already defined good, evil, faith, and destiny. Chaffa’s conversation with Lewis shows how the novel draws from epic literature, religious texts, and apocalyptic storytelling, while also challenging those traditions. With dark humor, anxiety, violence, and moral tension, Canon is less a simple end-times adventure than a novel about resistance, choice, and the struggle to create meaning inside a world shaped by someone else’s narrative.
