About this work

This is an article introducing METS (Metadata Encoding and Transmission Standard), a standard for encoding and transferring metadata related to digital objects in libraries. The article explains that managing digital library collections requires metadata that is far more extensive and complex than the descriptive metadata traditionally used for print and physical resources. It covers the different categories of metadata needed for digital objects, including structural metadata describing how objects are organized, and discusses how METS addresses these requirements as a framework for creating and maintaining digital library collections.
