The Place of Lyric Poetry in the Work of Bertolt Brecht

This is an article examining the lyric poetry of Bertolt Brecht in relation to the political, economic, and social conditions of his time. It argues that Brecht's poems reflect the same thinking that shaped his narrative theatre, challenging readers to engage with contemporary issues. The article traces a development across his work: his early poems show nihilistic, anarchist, and expressionist tendencies, mocking bourgeois life in ways consistent with his early plays, while his poetry from the mid-1930s onward takes on a Marxist orientation.
