About this work

This is a textbook covering the principles and practice of wastewater treatment, written for a new generation of scientists and engineers entering the field. It draws together advances from the past two decades across chemistry, microbiology, physical and bioprocess engineering, and mathematics, moving the discipline away from empirical methods toward a first-principles approach. The material has been developed to the point where much of it is expressed through mathematical models suitable for computer simulation, giving readers both the conceptual foundations and the quantitative tools needed to work in modern wastewater treatment.

"Over the past twenty years, the knowledge and understanding of wastewater treatment have advanced extensively and moved away from empirically-based approaches to a first principles approach embracing chemistry, microbiology, physical and bioprocess engineering, and mathematics. Many of these advances have matured to the degree that they have been codified into mathematical models for simulation with computers. For a new generation of young scientists and engineers entering the wastewater tre...
