Author: Sanskrit theatre tradition of Kerala · featured: Nepathya, Margi Madhu Chakyar · c. 10th century CE
About this work
According to UNESCO, Kutiyattam is one of India's oldest living theatre traditions: through eye expression and the language of the hands, the actor elaborates the main character's thoughts and feelings in such detail that a single act may take days and a complete performance up to forty days. According to Leela Venkataraman in The Asian Age, in Bali Vadham the actor plays Bali's death breath by breath for over half an hour. According to the University of British Columbia, in Kalyanasaugandhikam Bhima goes into the jungle to fetch a fragrant flower and meets the elderly Hanuman, whose tail blocks his path.
