This is an academic article that examines the novel Terrorist by John Updike through the lens of radicalization theory. The article argues that violent domestic extremism is as destructive as violent foreign extremism, a point it traces through the behavior of the novel's protagonist. To analyze that character, the article applies the framework of McCauley and Moskalenko, who divide radicalization into individual, group, and mass categories and identify twelve mechanisms underlying it. The article uses this framework to interpret the protagonist's path toward extremism as depicted in Updike's novel, which was written in the context of the widespread cultural and literary response to the September 11 attacks.
