About this work

The play is set in a Beijing teahouse and follows its customers and the people around it across three periods, from the last years of the Qing dynasty and the warlord era to the war with Japan and after. According to the Hong Kong Leisure and Cultural Services Department, the teahouse is where people air their views on current events, and it becomes the backdrop for the economic and social chaos from the fall of the Qing to the civil war. According to Wikipedia, the Beijing People's Art Theatre production, directed by Jiao Juyin and Xia Chun, opened on 29 March 1958 at the Capital Theatre in Beijing, with Yu Shizhi as Wang Lifa. It toured Germany, France and Switzerland in 1980 as the first Chinese spoken drama performed outside China, and was revived in 2005 for Jiao's centenary and taken to the United States.
