About this work
In 1808, in the asylum of Charenton, the Marquis de Sade directs the inmates in a play about the murder of the revolutionary Jean-Paul Marat by Charlotte Corday in 1793: a play within a play. The asylum director, Coulmier, expects a patriotic show, but the inmates keep voicing their own views, and the debate between Marat and Sade turns on whether true revolution comes from changing society or changing oneself. Peter Weiss's play opened on 29 April 1964 at the Schiller Theater in West Berlin, and the same year Peter Brook staged it for the Royal Shakespeare Company in Geoffrey Skelton's translation with lyrics by Adrian Mitchell; the production reached Broadway in December 1965 and won the Tony Awards for Best Play and Best Direction. In 1967 Brook filmed it with Patrick Magee (Sade), Ian Richardson (Marat) and Glenda Jackson (Corday).
