About this work

Two young people from feuding families in Verona fall in love and marry in secret, and a chain of violence and misunderstanding ends in both their deaths. According to Grupo Galpão's website, Gabriel Villela moved the tragedy into Brazilian popular culture: the set, props and songs come from the backlands of Minas Gerais, and a narrator speaking in a language inspired by Guimarães Rosa guides the story. According to Maddy Costa in the Guardian, Shakespeare himself appears on stage as narrator, actors walk on stilts and Mercutio is a red-nosed clown. As Bárbara Heliodora describes it, the main stage is an old funeral limousine that evokes a travelling troupe, and the show was made for open-air and street performance.
