The Drunken Concubine (Guifei Zui Jiu), as performed by Mei Lanfang
Author: Mei Lanfang (performer), traditional Peking opera · 1955
About this work
A short Peking opera piece about Yang Guifei, favourite consort of the Tang emperor Xuanzong. She waits for the emperor at the Pavilion of a Hundred Flowers, only to learn he has gone to another consort; hurt and alone, she drinks cup after cup until she is drunk, then returns to the palace in sorrow. Mei Lanfang made the role a signature of his style through song, movement, fan and water-sleeve work. His performance was preserved in the 1955 film Stage Art of Mei Lanfang, and his 1930 US and 1935 Soviet tours influenced Brecht and Meyerhold.
