About this work
Under apartheid, Sizwe Banzi has come to Port Elizabeth to find work, but his pass book orders him to leave. One night he and his friend Buntu find a dead man whose papers are in order, and to stay and work Sizwe must take on the dead man's name and identity. The play opens with a long comic monologue by Styles, a township photographer, and ends in his studio. It was devised collectively by Fugard and the two Black actors who first performed it.
در دوران آپارتاید، سیزوه بانزی که برای یافتن کار به پورت الیزابت آمده، به‌خاطر کارت عبورش (پاس) باید شهر را ترک کند. او و دوستش بونتو شبی جسد مردی را پیدا می‌کنند که کارت عبور معتبری دارد، و سیزوه برای ماندن و کار کردن ناچار می‌شود نام و هویت مرده را بپذیرد. نمایش با تک‌گویی بلند و خنده‌دار استایلز، عکاس محله، آغاز می‌شود و در عکاس‌خانهٔ او پایان می‌یابد. متن به‌صورت گروهی از دل بداهه‌پردازی‌های فوگارد و دو بازیگر سیاه‌پوستش ساخته شد.
