این کتاب پژوهشی است دربارهی شعبدهبازی صحنهای در دوران طلایی آن، از ۱۸۶۰ تا ۱۹۱۰. نویسنده چهار توهم نمادین این دوره را از نزدیک بررسی میکند و هر یک را نمایندهی نوعی از شعبدههای رایج آن روزگار میداند: توهم آینهای معروف به «شبح پپر»، «خانم ناپدیدشونده» که تلهپورتاسیون را در عصر شتاب حملونقل به نمایش میگذاشت، و لویتاسیون یا معلقسازی. هر کدام از این شعبدهها در بستر فرهنگی و تاریخِ رسانهای دوران خود تحلیل میشوند.
