About this work

Noh, Japan's poetic ritual theatre, took shape in the 14th century under Kan'ami and his son Zeami, who wrote many of its central plays and set out its principles (hana, the 'flower' of performance, and yūgen, mysterious grace) in his treatises. A masked principal actor on a four-pillared wooden stage, with chorus, flute and drums, often embodies a ghost or a figure from the past. UNESCO inscribed Nōgaku on the intangible heritage list in 2008.
