About this work

Tragedy of Siavosh is a play in the naqqali (storytelling) tradition, set in the coffeehouse of Asghar Agha, an old storyteller who was barred from his art years ago and turned his café into a meeting place for storytellers and musicians. One strange night the regulars improvise, together, the Shahnameh story of Siavash: Sudabeh's false accusation, the ordeal by fire, the pact with Afrasiab and exile in Turan, the building of Siavashgerd and his death through Garsivaz's intrigue. In the end the mythic Siavash and Asghar Agha's own son, also named Siavash, merge. It was the first work of the Iranian National Theatre Group (founded in 1989 at the Center for Performing Arts) and the first Iranian production staged abroad after 1979. The Paris run of April 1990 was first announced for the Théâtre des Deux Portes, and the programme was printed with that name, but it finally played five sold-out nights at the Théâtre de Paris; the play was also given one night in the main hall of UNESCO in Paris. Paris cast: Hasan Pourshirazi, Ghotbeddin Sadeghi, Hadi Eslami, Iraj Rad, Deldar Golchin, Marjaneh Golchin, Mohammad Shiri, Mostafa Abdollahi, Enayat Shafie, Nosrat Taheri-Shoa, Majid Soltani and Sahel Saatsaz; movement and music by Deldar Golchin; make-up by Rasoul Ahmadi; poster and programme by Mohammad Vejdani. According to the Paris programme, Siavash Tahmoures had staged a first version of the text at Tehran's Chaharsu theatre in early 1989 (Dey 1367); he staged it again in the same hall in November–December 2009. Sadegh Hatefi acted in Tahmoures's productions.

These are the play's main professional productions (Tehran, Paris, UNESCO, Germany). Separately, in 2026 a workshop production with students of the Owrang Institute was staged in Sacramento and Fresno.
