About this work

Hamid Samandarian, who translated Dürrenmatt's play from German himself, staged The Visit in 1972 (1351 SH) at the University of Tehran's Molavi Hall, with Jamileh Sheikhi as Claire Zachanassian alongside Akbar Zanjanpour, Ali Ramez and Gholamreza Tabatabaei; it is remembered as a high point of his career and of 1970s Iranian theatre. Thirty-five years later, in the 2007–08 season, he directed a new staging at the main hall of Tehran's City Theatre with Gohar Kheirandish, Payam Dehkordi, Ali Ramez and Ahmad Saatchian, dedicated to Sheikhi's memory. Critics have stressed his rigorous text analysis and his roots in the German directing tradition.
