About this work
Siah-bazi, or ru-hozi, is an improvised Iranian comic form combining music, dance and banter, centred on the quick-witted servant character 'Siah' opposite his master. Saadi Afshar (1934–2013) was among its best-known performers, first appearing on stage in 1951, leading a troupe at Tehran's Nasr Theatre and later playing in productions such as 'Sa'di Becomes Hamlet' and 'Our Town's Cobbler' directed by Mahmoud Azizi (both 2004). The form's use of blackface makeup has also made it the subject of critical debate in recent years.
سیاه‌بازی یا روحوضی نمایش شادی‌آور و بداهه‌محور ایرانی است که با موسیقی، رقص و طنز اجرا می‌شود و در آن شخصیت «سیاه»، نوکری حاضرجواب، در برابر ارباب قرار می‌گیرد. سعدی افشار (۱۳۱۳–۱۳۹۲) از نامدارترین سیاه‌بازان بود که از ۱۳۳۰ به صحنه رفت، سال‌ها در تئاتر نصر کار کرد و در اجراهایی چون «سعدی هملت می‌شود» و «پینه‌دوز شهر ما» به کارگردانی محمود عزیزی بازی کرد. این گونهٔ نمایشی امروز به دلیل چهره‌آرایی سیاه موضوع بحث‌های انتقادی نیز هست.
