About this work

Naqqali is often described as the oldest form of Iranian dramatic performance: a naqqal recounts epic tales, above all Ferdowsi's Shahnameh, in verse and prose with gesture and sometimes music and painted scrolls. UNESCO placed it on the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding in 2011, noting the ageing of master morsheds and the decline of coffeehouses. Fatemeh Habibizad, known as Gordafarid, regarded as the first professional female naqqal, has performed the form in Iran, Europe and the United States.
