About this work

Ta'zieh is Iran's ritual dramatic art, retelling religious and historical events through verse, song, music and movement, with all roles, including female ones, played by men. UNESCO inscribed it on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2010. At the Shiraz Arts Festival 'Ta'zieh-e Horr' was staged in the open air at the Hafezieh by Khojasteh Kia and Parviz Sayyad, and in 2003 Abbas Kiarostami presented a Ta'zieh troupe in Rome, surrounding the stage with screens showing Iranian village audiences watching an earlier performance.
