About this work
A six-part cycle composed between 1974 and 1985 that grows from a solo viola to a large orchestra with four solo horns in the Epilogue. Grisey derived its harmonies from the analysed overtone spectrum of sounds (Partiels takes a single low E as its starting point), making the cycle the central landmark of what came to be called spectral music.
