About this work
A one-page score of 53 short melodic figures that any number of musicians play in order, each moving on at their own pace over a steady pulse, so no two performances sound alike. Premiered in San Francisco in 1964 and recorded for Columbia in 1968, it is widely regarded as the first masterpiece of minimalism.
