About this work
Recorded over roughly two weeks in March 1996 at Havana's EGREM studios, the album began as a Cuban–Malian project and, when the Malian musicians' visas failed to arrive, became a gathering of veteran Cuban musicians reviving pre-revolution styles. Ry Cooder, Nick Gold and Juan de Marcos González shaped the sessions, and the record won a Grammy. Wim Wenders' 1999 documentary amplified its reach, and it became the best-selling Cuban album in history.
