About this work

Reza, a burglar nicknamed 'the Lizard', escapes prison wearing the robes of a cleric he met in the infirmary. On his way to the border a small town mistakes him for the cleric they were expecting, and his accidental example inspires people to good deeds, in a comedy that won the audience award at the Fajr festival.

¶ Young calls The Lizard exemplary commercial comedy that shows a crack in Iranian censorship, criticising religious excess while respecting the spirit of Islam. She praises the handling of its comic set pieces and finds it more accessible to Western audiences than most Iranian art films. ▶ Listen at the source ↗

نقد · A. A. Yone (ای. ¶ Yone argues the film satirises both an idealised image of the clergy and the corruption of those holding religious authority, but aims its sharpest hostility at heavy-handed power of any kind, embodied by the prison warden. He sees its deliberate ambiguity, open to both subversive and state-friendly readings, as its main achievement. ▶ Listen at the source ↗
