Kamal-ol-Molk
Author:
About this work
A portrait of Mohammad Ghaffari, the celebrated Qajar-era painter known as Kamal-ol-Molk, and his dealings with kings and men of power from the court of Naser al-Din Shah through the Constitutional era to the rise of Reza Khan. With literary dialogue and lavish period design, Hatami offers less a strict biography than a personal meditation on the artist and power.

¶ Tavazoei argues the film is not a conventional biopic, since Hatami blends fact and invention until they can hardly be told apart. He still finds its central theme, the artist's relationship with power, well handled, and singles out the closing exchange with Naser al-Din Shah as a fitting answer to a patron who sees art as a mere tool. ▶ Listen at the source ↗
¶ Yousefian examines the dialogue between Naser al-Din Shah and the painter as an example of Hatami's poetic, dialogue-driven cinema. He reads the scene as showing the disordered status of art and honour in that era, with the king's remarks echoing the cultural conditions of the film's own time. ▶ Listen at the source ↗
