About this work

A boy from southern Iran who loses his family in a wartime bombing escapes by truck to a village in Gilan, where a farm woman, Naii, takes him in despite the villagers' suspicion and the fact that they share no language. Made in the mid-1980s and held back by censors for several years, the film's new 4K restoration won the Venice Classics prize for best restored film in 2025.

¶ The institute's own bilingual essay reads the film as a study of war's trauma lodged in a child's mind, noting that Beyzaie shows war through Bashu's fears and mistrust rather than at the front. It argues the film is about compatriots who do not know one another and mistake differences of language and skin colour for foreignness, with a shared language serving as a bond that connects the peoples of one land without erasing their differences. ▶ Listen at the source ↗

¶ Barzanji argues the film shows how a community turns not understanding someone into a moral verdict about who belongs. He reads Naii's care for Bashu as hard, repeated labour under social pressure, which makes the film a strong case for compassion as a social act rather than a sentimental one. ▶ Listen at the source ↗

¶ Massahi argues that Bashu challenges narrow definitions of Iranian identity by rooting it in land, myth and shared history rather than language or ideology. He sets it against official wartime cinema and connects it to present-day displacement and divisions among Iranians at home and abroad. ▶ Listen at the source ↗

¶ The authors read Bashu as a stranger shaped by the direct trauma of the Iran–Iraq war rather than by myth. They see Naii's sheltering of him against her community's hostility as an ethical act that loosens exclusionary borders and builds a family based on care and solidarity rather than blood or origin. ▶ Listen at the source ↗

¶ This piece surveys Beyzaie's metaphor-rich cinema and presents Bashu as a film that shows war's brutality through a child who flees north. It also covers the film's origin in an outline by Susan Taslimi and how it was held back by censors before finally being cleared for release. ▶ Listen at the source ↗
