The Study of Discursive Prosthetics: Why Is Narrative Lie a Prosthesis?

This is an academic article that explores the concept of lying as a form of prosthesis within discourse theory. Drawing on Umberto Eco's theory of prosthesis and its role in discourse, the article argues that lying, understood as a discursive system, shares essential characteristics with prosthesis. The central question is how discourse takes on a prosthetic quality, and how lying as prosthesis causes discourse to deviate from its original path, generating an imaginary and eventful space that the article terms transactive. The article proceeds by examining two related hypotheses derived from this framework.
