This is the 245th ghazal from Rumi's Divan of Shams, written in Persian. The poem takes up the Quranic image of clay as a material shaped by divine fire, drawing on verses from Sura al-Hijr. The ghazal addresses the human condition, calling the reader to strip away false attachments and self-deceptions so as to perceive divine beauty. It presents the heated spring as a metaphor for the soul's transformative essence, using the Quranic term for clay fashioned in fire to suggest how suffering and spiritual heat can refine the human being toward liberation and revelation of hidden wisdom.
