موریس مرلو‌پونتی در این کار فلسفی به مسئلهٔ جسمانیت می‌پردازد، یعنی وضعیت بدن انسان و رابطهٔ آن با آگاهی. او انسان را یک آگاهی متجسد می‌داند و با این دیدگاه دوگانگی سنتی بین بدن و روح را زیر سؤال می‌برد. در این دیدگاه بدن انسان نقش بنیادی دارد و نه صرفاً یک ابزار منفعل؛ بلکه بدن ما راه درک ما از جهان و ارتباط ما با دیگران است.
The main topic of Maurice Merleau-Ponty’s philosophical consideration is the problem of carnality: the status of the human body, understanding (in this context) of consciousness and placing a human being in the background of everlasting conflict concerning the relation between the body and the soul.
