رمانی انگلیسی است که نویسندهٔ آن در روسیه زندگی می‌کرد و شاهد انقلاب روسی بود. این اثر زندگی اشرافیت را در سن‌پترزبورگ (پتروگراد) در دورهٔ پیش از انقلاب و روزه‌ای نخستین آن به تصویر می‌کشد. نویسنده با شناخت عمیق از فضای شهر، جغرافیای آن و ویژگی‌های اسطوره‌وار آن، و همچنین آشنایی با تعابیر روسی، داستان را با سبک و محتوایی به یاد دورهٔ تولستوی و تورگنیف می‌آورد. کتاب در سال ۱۹۱۹ منتشر شد.
