این کتاب بررسیای از نقش زبان گفتاری معاصر فارسی در متون ادبی است. نویسنده توجه میدهد که در ایران امروزی دو استاندارد از فارسی مدرن وجود دارد: یکی نوشتاری و یکی گفتاری. درحالیکه ادبیات عموماً به شکل نوشتاری سامانیافته است، اشکال گفتاری نیز در متن ادبی حاضرند. این مطالعه پنج رمان منتخب را با روشهای مبتنی بر تحلیل رجسترها بررسی میکند تا به درک عمیقتری از نحوهی کاربرد زبان گفتاری در ادبیات رسایی کند.
