About this work

William Alexander Clouston (1843--96) was a Scottish folklorist and journalist, known for his interest in Oriental folklore and fiction and for his three volumes of Variants and Analogues of some of the Tales in the Supplemental Nights, a work composed with reference to Richard Francis Burton's Supplemental Nights to The Book of the Thousand Nights and a Night. این کتاب گزیده‌ای از اشعار عربی است که ویلیام الکساندر کلاوستون، محقق و روزنامه‌نگار اسکاتلندی، آن را ویراسته و مقدمه‌ای بر آن نوشته است. این مجموعه حدود هفتصد سال از تاریخ شعر عربی را دربرمی‌گیرد و برای خوانندگان انگلیسی‌زبان تدوین شده است. کلاوستون به فولکلور و ادبیات شرقی علاقه داشت و پیش از این در حوزه قصه‌های هزار و یک شب نیز کار کرده بود.
