این مقاله به دوره‌ای مهم در تاریخ زبان فارسی می‌پردازد؛ سده‌های شانزدهم تا هجدهم میلادی که صفویان یکی از قدرت‌های بزرگ منطقه بودند. در این دوره، فارسی نو زبان ادبی و زبان مشترک پهنه‌ای گسترده از آناتولی تا چین و از آسیای مرکزی تا شبه‌قاره هند بود. موضوع اصلی این است که چگونه جدایی سیاسی ایران پس از صفویه از آسیای مرکزی و افغانستان به پیدایش گونه‌های گویشی زبان فارسی نو انجامید.
