Diminutives in French and English: A Comparative Study

This is a scholarly article that attempts to develop a classification system for sound words and interjections in English and French. Drawing on examples from literary texts, animated works, children's magazines, and conversational speech, the article examines this linguistic phenomenon across both languages. It finds that while the phenomenon is universal, a specific sound word or interjection in one language does not necessarily have an equivalent in another. Despite similarities in definitions, no clear taxonomy emerges, as some of these forms represent natural sounds while others are produced by the human voice.
